This past Sunday, many of you witnessed the result of a fish kill event in our lake. Because of a number of environmental factors (chief among those being periods of high air temperatures), this resulted in extremely low oxygen levels in the water. As a result, this event is not considered unusual. In fact, you might have seen a recent report that OKC’s Lake Hefner experienced a fish kill as well. Those of you who have lived here many years might remember that we’ve had several other fish kills over the years.
TurnPro Aquatics was quick to respond Sunday morning to begin gathering the dead fish before the smell would have become overwhelming. They returned on Labor Day to finish gathering the fish. There is no indication that TurnPro – the company that treats the lake – did anything wrong. We were pleased by their response on a holiday weekend. Still, the Board will be meeting with TurnPro in the near future to determine what, if anything, could have been done differently and to plan for any necessary actions next summer. We will also be working with a fish supply company to restock at the appropriate time.
